I once heard that our greatest human behaviour is to belong. We want to be a part of something. And I remember years ago I learned from ‘The Secret” that you are who you surround yourself by. You start to act, behave, and talk like those around you without even realizing it. ⁠
⁠
If your goal is to be healthy, start hanging around those that are healthy.  You will begin to build better habits when you surround yourself by people that have your desired behaviour. ⁠
⁠
Staying a part of the group is important for retaining your habits since your identity becomes connected to those around you.  Even when we feel like an undesired behaviour is not normal we may feel pressured to fit in with the group and do it anyway just to feel like we are fitting in. ⁠
⁠
We value acceptance more then being correct which is why our behaviours adapt to those around us. When we are unsure how to act, we act like the group we are around. The normal behaviour often overdrives the desired behaviour. There is an internal pressure to be the same with the group.  The reward of being accepted is higher than the reward of being correct.⁠
